Choosing The Right Pile Height

Choosing the right pile height can seem like a daunting task, especially if this is your first time installing artificial grass. Before we can get into the best practices for selecting the right pile height for your project, first let’s define “pile height” so you know exactly what you’re looking for and why.

What is pile height?

Put simply, pile height is the name for the measured height of any artificial grass – from the artificial grass backing to the top surface fibres. Different pile heights are better suited to different projects, whilst heights can vary massively from as little as 10mm to as long as 200mm, most domestic garden spaces tend to opt for 25-45mm pile heights as these grasses are seen as most true to life.

Which height is best?

Artificial lawns have connotations with thick, lush, ever-green gardens which require a fraction of the maintenance a real turf lawn with the same aesthetics would. We believe this is the reason our most popular grasses across the range are those with a longer yarn (greater pile height). It’s worth noting however, that grasses with a pile height of 40mm+ require a slightly higher level of maintenance to ensure they remain looking their best for years to come. We recommend a pile height of 30-48mm for most domestic installations; however, this may vary depending on the location and purpose of the installation. If you’re unsure, just give us a call or email! We’re always happy to help.

How to maintain longer pile heights

The longer the pile height, the heavier the blades of grass will be individually, thus the most likely it becomes that gravity will cause the blades to keel over. This results in flat or matted looking grass, rather than the luscious lawn you desire. However, if you have noticed this issue with your existing installation do not worry – the yarns can be returned to their upright stance with the persuasion of a medium/hard bristled yard broom or a mechanical brush. All the artificial grass maintenance service packages we offer include a mechanical brush up and weed spray out.

If you are unsure which pile height would be best suited for your installation, please do not hesitate to get in touch and a member of our friendly team will be more than happy to assist you.

Indoor Artificial Grass Ideas

With the rise of ‘staycations’ in the last year, in addition to a warmer than usual summer creeping up on us, artificial grass has continued to grow ever-more popular across the UK. However, with the majority spending more time at home than ever before, home renovations have too seen a significant incline. With many revisiting forgotten projects and brushing off their DIY skills, it’s no wonder artificial grass has become more commonplace inside the home. So, if you’re looking for some home makeover inspiration, look no further! We’ve put together some of the most unique and creative indoor artificial grass installation ideas we could find, to help you mirror the beauty of the great outdoors in your home’s interior design.

Kids Bedrooms

The most common use for artificial grass in this setting is to create a sports-themed room dedicated to your child’s favourite sport. An artificial grass flooring paired with some of their favourite team’s memorabilia and sports equipment and your child is sure to be over the moon sleeping pitch-side, dreaming of their team taking home the title! But what if your child is more into Alice in Wonderland than Defoe from Sunderland? Artificial grass flooring would be a truly whimsical addition to any woodland themed bedroom, teamed with some fairy lights and floral décor, what could be more magical?

Play-room / Games room

Artificial grass is the perfect flooring for any playroom where children will be playing together or with toys as its soft surface means parents won’t have to worry about grazed knees or toys damaged from being dropped. If you are wanting a more mature aesthetic for a games room used by teens or adults, artificial grass makes an incredible accent to any room when paired with dark accessories.

Home/garden office

With the rise in employees working from home, the UK has seen an incredible rise in spare rooms, sheds and extensions being converted into office spaces. We have already seen numerous businesses opting to use artificial grass flooring, with the understanding that creating a more vibrant office space boosts employee morale. Easy to lay and even easier to maintain indoors, artificial grass is the ideal addition to any home office space.

Home Gym

The closing and reopening of gyms over the last year has led many to finally bite the bullet and invest in home exercise equipment. Whilst having the equipment is one thing, having the space to complete a work-out safely and efficiently with this equipment is vital to ensure you are maximising your return on investment. Weights and other heavy equipment can be damaging to hard wood floors causing wear over time. This is not a problem with artificial grass as its cushioning will prevent dents or cracks to the surface below, and the yarns can be brushed up if flattened by heavy objects over time.

So, what are you waiting for? Get started on your artificial grass installation today!

How To: Clean K9Turf

With the weather finally heating up and summer edging ever closer, maintenance for pet friendly artificial grass becomes crucial to ensure your lawn stays fresh and clean for all of your (furry) family and friends to enjoy.

Remember: Artificial grass isn’t NO maintenance, it’s LOW maintenance.
Failing to adhere to the necessary maintenance for your turf could result in your warranty being void, so if you’re unsure of what to do or when to do it – read on for all the information you need!

WHY DOES YOUR LAWN NEED EXTRA TLC IN SUMMER?

K9Turf’s woven quadro-bind backing works hand in hand with the Zeolite Infill that sits within and the bio-enzyme cleaner we supply for maintenance, to prevent the build up of harmful bacteria and toxic ammonia left behind by dog waste. If left to fester this build-up causes an unbearable smell, especially in warm summer weather, which becomes increasingly difficult to remove.

The infographic below details exactly when and how to apply the bio-enzyme cleaner, in addition to explaining the roles both the cleaner and zeolite infill play in keeping your lawn hygienic and fresh smelling year-round:

IS IT SAFE FOR MY PETS TO USE AFTER CLEANING?

Our mission with K9 artificial grass is to ensure all pet users can safely enjoy their lawn year round! Our K9 Turf Enzyme Cleaner has been specifically designed to be completely safe for all pets and children too. There are no harmful chemicals that could tarnish your pet’s skin or paws! Nor any harmful fragrances used as these can have an adverse effect on your animal’s sense of smell! Our enzyme cleaner is made with a subtle fragrance that still leaves your lawn smelling fresh and clean.

SPRING CLEANING SLIPPED YOUR MIND? WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED!

If your cleaning cupboard is in need of a restock, don’t fret! We’ve put together a comprehensive list of K9 approved cleaning products to have your lawn summer ready in no time at all!

• K9 Bio-Enzyme Cleaner

Used between routine maintenance services to keep the lawn hygienic and prevent pet waste build up. Recommended application: every 1-3 months depending on the frequency with which the lawn is used.

• Zeolite Infill

K9 Turf Zeolite infill has an 80% absorption rate which is the highest in artificial grass infills. It is only recommended to use with K9 Turf or another pet friendly artificial grass with a woven (non-latex) backing.

• Last Resort

Our Last Resort cleaner is just that! If you have artificial grass which is starting to smell we recommend an intensive clean using Last Resort. Great to use with a ProVetLogic – Pro Foam Multi-Dilution Gun OR watering can.

Transform Your Pub Beer Garden with Artificial Grass

Whether you are a pub or restaurant looking at inventive ways of increasing capacity whilst adhering to social distancing restrictions or simply thinking of reinventing your private outdoor space, our robust range of artificial grasses can help do just that. Transform your pub garden with artificial grass!

As a result of the pandemic, restaurants and pubs have been forced to become inventive with their space and their business model over the last year. But finally, just in time for the warmer weather, we are beginning to see the opening up of outdoor areas in a bid to get people back into pubs safely and swiftly. Creating an outdoor seating area effectively extends the venue and is one of the ways that the hospitality sector has been able to adapt to the age of social distancing until the time comes when they can cater to full capacity once more. Until then, the need exists to do what is possible to make the business viable and by extension, provide an attractive experience for customers who, likewise, are desperate to get back to as semblance of normality.

Why choose artificial grass?

Whilst you may be considering alternative surfacing options such as concrete flagging or real turf, it’s worth noting both of these options fall short in some way, when used in a social space such as a pub beer garden. Real turf may look appealing at first, but with heavy footfall the turf will quickly become a sea of brown sludge which your guests will likely be less than thrilled about trailing around with them. Concrete flagging, on the other hand provides a durable surface for guests to dine on, however concrete can be lethal with regards to slips and trips as the material has little to no shock absorption and flags used for paving can often have exposed harsh edges. (It’s safe to say no one likes a boozy brunch that ends in blood shed!) Artificial grass provides peace of mind that your guests can safely enjoy your outdoor space without anyone needing to grab a mop bucket or first aid kit!

How does green space improve the outdoor dining experience?

Whilst the normality we remember may be shouting over each other for service stood shoulder to shoulder at the bar, the hospitality industry is encouraging customers to embrace the ‘new normal’ and a new appreciation for the outdoors that may come with it. Not everyone will have experienced a commercial outdoor dining experience, so with the ‘new normal’ comes a unique opportunity to set the standard. When we think of the great outdoors and nature, we immediately think of clear blue skies and green grass. While we can’t always guarantee clear blue skies, especially in the United Kingdom, what artificial grass can do is guarantee your grass will always be green. Picnics, beer gardens and outdoor events become that much more immersive for your guest when surrounded by beautiful grass that looks and feels just as nature originally intended.

Artificial Grass For Sports

Here at Yorkshire Artificial Lawns, we supply an extensive range of artificial grasses perfectly suited to surface a wide variety of different sports and activity spaces. Want to practice your favourite sport from the comfort and convenience of your own garden? You’re in luck! Many of our grasses are well suited to individual sporting activities.

Using fake grass for sport is becoming increasingly popular. Using artificial turf removes the need for watering and mowing while reducing maintenance costs drastically. When compared to real grass or tarmac, synthetic turf has a wide range of benefits to offer. Durable artificial sports surfaces allow play in all weather conditions, all year round. Our artificial grasses allow water to permeate through the backing this means your pitch can be played on all year round in all weather conditions without losing quality – no muddy patches or standing water! The tough nature of artificial grass offers great versatility, providing opportunities to host non-sporting events such as shows and concerts at your venue.

However, when it comes to playing sports, its safety that is of the utmost importance. Traditionally, sports grounds, fields and pitches across the country have been surfaced with materials like tarmac and real grass. Although these may appear to be fine at first glance, but in reality they can be hazardous, potentially leading to trips, falls and injuries. Hard, non-cushioned surfaces are the usual culprit, though with natural grass, the field can also become muddy or slippery when wet, leading to increased risk of injury.

Artificial grass is great for those requiring a long-lasting, cost-effective sports solution. Highly durable, flexible, and adaptable to any given situation, it isn’t hard to see why increasing numbers of sports clubs and organisations are making the decision to invest in artificial sports surfaces. No longer will you need to spend precious time and money mowing or watering grass, weeding, or treating the surface of your pitch. Artificial grass requires significantly less work –giving you more time to focus on improving your game!

If you aren’t sure which surface will make the best fit for your sporting requirements, please don’t hesitate to get in touch and a member of our friendly team will be more than happy to assist you. We’re on hand to respond to any questions and queries Monday to Friday 9am-5pm.

However, for those with severe allergies, summer can be a very trying time. As the pollen count continues to climb the summer months can feel like an endless battle for hay fever sufferers. Hay fever is usually at its worst between late March and September, especially when it’s warm, humid, and windy. This is when the pollen count reaches its highest.

When the pollen count is rising, many GP’s advise sufferers to avoid walking/sitting on grass and to avoid going outside for long periods of time. This is the true burden of being a hay fever sufferer, as the allergic reaction confines them to their homes at the height of summer, when they would much rather be outside enjoying the sunny weather with friends and family. That’s where artificial grass comes in, could this be the long-awaited respite for summer allergy sufferers? Keep reading to find out more!

Artificial Grass & Allergies

Having your real lawn transformed into an evergreen expanse will significantly reduce the amount of pollen your garden space. Whilst the artificial lawn does not create pollen itself, unfortunately this does not however prevent pollen and other allergens that float in the summer breeze from being attracted to the artificial grass blades. For this reason, if you are thinking of laying an artificial lawn to reduce allergy suffering it is important to understand the maintenance which is necessary to ensure the lawn continues to aid your symptom reduction long-term. To prevent to build up of pollen and other allergens on your artificial lawn it is essential that the expanse is washed down regularly, ideally with a hose to, to wash away any particles which may have become caught in the nooks and crannies of the lawn’s fibres.

Whilst it would be a true miracle to rid your lawn of outdoor grass, replace this with artificial grass and never suffer with hay fever symptoms again, unfortunately that is not that case. But do not fray! Laying artificial grass at your home’s points of entry (the front and back doors, under window bays, air conditioning vents etc) can however significantly reduce the amount of pollen from the places you’ve been from getting into your home.

Artificial Grass Benefits

Family members – and fur family members, too – who suffer from allergies can benefit from a lawn that is converted to an expanse of artificial turf. Although it doesn’t completely eliminate pollen from nearby trees and grasses, the immediate proximity is significantly less and reduces allergen symptoms from sprouting up instantaneously as you exit your abode. Artificial turf also cuts down on the need to use fertilisers and herbicides that can be harmful to the environment, as well as your furry friends, this can save on water usage and maintenance costs meaning that you’ll see a return on your investment in no time at all!

So don’t delay, take the first steps towards transforming your lawn today!

Latex vs K9 Artificial Grass

We are saddened to see the continual rise in customers who have had latex grass installed for its low maintenance and clean aesthetics, only to resort to ripping the lawn up and replacing it after merely a year or two. The primary reason being due to the smell, caused by pets using the lawn as a toilet, becoming so unbearable. That’s why we developed K9 Turf, the UK’s number 1 pet friendly artificial grass suitable for all your family and (furry) friends to enjoy!

What is K9 Turf?

K9 Turf is a high-quality artificial grass designed specifically for dogs. It is manufactured in the USA by industry leaders in artificial grass production. The specialist Pro Flow Urethane backing speeds up the flow of moisture, leaving your artificial lawn free from ammonia and harmful bacteria, unlike latex backed grass which holds moisture, causing your artificial grass to smell strongly of ammonia. K9 Turf is your only choice when it comes to artificial grass for pets that is completely safe for your pets and the entire family to add peace of mind your investment is guaranteed. Manufactured in the USA, K9 Turf has been designed using advanced technology to create the highest quality artificial grass for pets. K9 Turf follows a 4 Phase System, each with its own purpose in ensuring your lawn is safe for all pets and children.

K9 4 Phase System

1. Firstly, we remove the existing turf using a turf cutter to ensure it is all gone. We do this to a depth of 5-8cm, leaving enough room for the new base. If edging is needed, we use a specialist steel edging. This product is easy to install and can create any shape or straight edge, it is also very discrete creating a more finished looking lawn. We do not use timber edging as eventually this can rot and if used by pets to urinate on it will hold moisture and cause your lawn to smell.

2. K9 turf is the world’s first and only 4 Layer Polyurethane Backing with a full Pro Flow Drainage System. It has a rapid flow, woven backing that allows all moisture to flow through the whole backing. There are no drainage holes in K9 Turf, the entire woven backing itself is the drainage “hole”!

3. The K9 Turf Zeolite Infill is a very important aspect of a K9 Turf installation. K9 Turf is manufactured specifically for the zeolite infill to sit in the bed of the grass. The zeolite infill catches the pet urine and it crystalises once moist. The crystallisation takes away the strong ammonia smell, unlike latex backed grasses or grasses with only a few drainage holes.

When it rains on the K9 Turf or it is watered with a hose, it then releases the crystalised ammonia, through to the backing of the grass and disposed of into the base works. This advanced drainage system, allows for you to enjoy your artificial grass ALL year round, with no harmful smells or bacteria, especially in the summer months! K9 turf comes with a full 18 Year Guarantee (T&C’s Apply), giving you that peace of mind with your investment. All K9 Turf products are available for you to buy through our online sites all year round.

4. K9 Turf Enzyme Cleaner is the No.1 artificial grass cleaner available on the market. It doesn’t just mask odours, it penetrates the turfs surface, eliminating odours and killing bacteria. The specialist enzyme cleaner travels through the grass to the subbase, following the trail from pet waste eliminating every particle. The cleaner acts as an organic waste degrader and controls toxic ammonia which can be harmful to pets, children and anybody else using the lawn. K9 Turf Enzyme Cleaner has been manufactured in the USA by ProVetLogic, a leading company in pet products. The product is nontoxic meaning it is environmentally friendly and 100% safe for all cats and dogs. Not only does the cleaner eliminate odour and kill bacteria, it also uses a bleaching action (without the bleach) to brighten the surface, leaving them looking sparkling clean with a fresh scent. The inherent biological action in the product cleans the artificial grass in between the required cleaning maintenance which is approximately every 3 months.
